Your resume is a sales tool that, as well as telling
a potential employer all the relevant information about you, should also be intended to
maximize your chances of getting the position that you want. One of the main difficulty
that employers face is sorting out applications and resumes
which look and read more or less identically; you can thus assist the employer, and improving
your chances of getting the job, by ensuring that your resume
and cover letter are a little different from the other
candidates'.
Here ae some tips for making your resume unique and stand-out
from the crowd:
- Work on your cover letter; you should always write
an individual customized cover letter for each job that you apply for. Make sure you address
the correct person by name, and spell both the person and the company's name correctly - double
check it! In the body of the letter you should state clearly what position you are applying for,
and highlight those areas of your
resume which make you the ideal candidate for the job.
If there are things in your resume which may raise questions
from a potential employer
(such as a prolonged gap in your resume),
it's a good idea to address any potential concerns and get them out
the way immediately, rather than risk having your resume
discarded. In short, your cover letter should explain
what position you are applying for, and why you are the perfect candidate for the job.
Please note of course that while your cover letter
comes in front of your resume when mailing or
faxing it, you will generally
need to actually prepare your resume first in order to
be able to write a good cover letter.
- Work on the Career Objective section of your
resume. The purpose of this section is to tell the
employer what you want, specifically, that you have an objective, and that it is one
which is aligned with their requirements.
- Both when writing your resume, and when choosing
which sections of
your resume to reference in your cover letter,
you should put the greatest emphasis on those qualifications, experiences and responsibilities that you
have had in the past which are most relevant to the job that you are applying for. Write about these
things in much more detail than less relevant experiences which may be listed on your
resume,
and be especially sure
to use
power words
to describe these elements of your background.
Don't be shy about describing your qualifications
and
quantifying
your achievements.
